Thank you for visiting the Whitty lab. We focus on development of advanced technologies for production of energy from solid fuels including biomass, municipal solid waste, black liquor, coal and petroleum coke, with emphasis on capturing resulting CO₂ for carbon neutral or even carbon negative power generation. Specific technologies we work with are gasification, chemical looping combustion, and oxy-fuel combustion. Our research combines experimental studies with modeling, and ranges from fundamental investigations of underlying chemistry and mechanisms to design, construction and operation of pilot-scale systems processing tons of material.
